Here’s a recipe to make your own Garam Masala spice mix at home! Garam Masala in Hindi literally translates as “hot spices.” It’s a mixture that can be used for any recipe, vegetarian or non-vegetarian, but if you’re only beginning to get used to Indian spices, it may be a good idea to use the mixture sparingly.
Here’s a quick and easy recipe for making the Garam Masala spice mix.
Ingredients:
1 Tablespoon coriander seeds
1 Tablespoon cumin seeds
1 Tablespoon black peppercorns
6 pods of green cardamom
2 pods of black cardamom
A four-centimeter-long stick of cinnamon
1 and a half Tablespoons fennel
8 cloves
1 star anise
1/2 a piece of nutmeg
A two-centimeter-long piece of dried ginger
Make it:
Roast all the above ingredients until fragrant. Remove from heat and grind to a smooth powder and store in an airtight container. Your Garam Masala is ready to use and here’s a recipe for chicken curry you could make with your fresh spice mix.
While cooking with Garam masala, you could add one or two bay leaves to enhance the flavour.
