Wasa gluten-free crispbread

Hi there! I discovered Wasa gluten-free crispbread at our local Rewe supermarket and was absolutely delighted! Swedish crispbread is very light and usually has no sugar. This version, with sesame and sea salt is also extremely delicious and definitely the healthier option when you’re craving chips and the like. So, without further ado, here’s my review:

Packaging

The crispbread slices come in the standard wasa cardboard box. Inside, they’re packed into little plastic bags of four to keep them crisp for longer. I do wonder why wasa chose to pack them in plastic, because the wheat versions are usually packed in paper. However, I know for a fack that gluten-free food manufacturers have to adhere to very strict guidelines regarding gluten contamination and that may explain why most producers use plastic packs rather than paper bags.

Taste and texture

The crispbread is slightly larger and thicker than the wheat version. Sesame seeds top the slice. It’s very crisp when you bite into it and you can also taste the sea salt. The texture is rough, but I really liked it. It does taste a bit different, but it’s very delicious. I had mine with cream cheese (I can handle lactose, so no problems there).

Ingredients

It was nice to note that wasa used potato flour and amaranth flour instead of just rice and maize flour, which most store-bought gluten-free breads contain. It also contains some sugar (4%) and yeast. It also contains momo- and diglycerides made of edible fatty acids and a thickening agent called Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, which is extracted from plant fibre. I found it confusing that the product says lactose-free but has traces of milk.

Price

€ 4.19

Here’s what I think

I think this gluten-free crispbread is a great alternative for gluten-intolerant people and those with Celiac disease. The price at 4.19 euros is a bit steep, but gluten-free products seem to have a premium placed on them. Regardless, this is a good product and definitely worth a try.
