Hi everyone. Today I’m reviewing Schar‘s gluten-free multigrain country bread with chia, flax and sunflower seeds.

(This is an independent review and the post does not contain any affiliate links).

Schär is an Italian company based in South Tyrol. Founded in 1922 by Dr. Anton Schär, the company first manufactured gluten-free infant formula and developed into a worldwide manufacturer of gluten-free products. The company has its headquarters in Burgstall near Meran in South Tyrol since 1981.

I have been buying Schar products for almost a decade now and it’s been evident how the company has tried to keep up with the needs and requirements of people with Celiac’s disease and gluten intolerance while maintaining the taste of gluten-free products.

So, here’s my review of Schar’s gluten-free multigrain country bread with chia, flax and sunflower seeds.

Taste and texture

You can taste the sourdough, and the buckwheat gives each slice a slightly bitter taste, which I like very much. The seeds add some crunch. The bread is moist and not as dry as some gluten-free breads tend to be. I like it better toasted and with butter or cream cheese. Speaking of texture, like I said, the bread feels moist. It has a brown colour from buckwheat and the different seeds.

Ingredients

The bread is primarily made of maize. The sourdough has been cultured from rice flour. Buckwheat, flax seeds, chia seeds and sunflower seeds have been mixed with psyllium husk to bind the ingredients. The product uses Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose as a thickening agent (I still need to do some research on this ingredient). The bread also contains soya protein, millets, sunflower oil, apple extracts and sugar. It is also lactose free.

Price

Between €2.63 and €3.29 in Germany

Packaging

Comes in a plastic packaging that keeps the product safe from gluten contamination. The company also writes on their website that their breads do not contain any preservatives or alcohol and need to be protected against contaminants. Schar has introduced recycled plastic in its packaging, but I am not sure if this product is packed with sustainable material.

What I think

A big yes from me!

Ten years ago, when I started my gluten-free diet, I could find gluten-free sandwich bread that was too sweet and pasty for my taste. Compared to those days, Schar’s current bouquet of products is fabulous. The country bread is my special favorite because it has a rustic and artisanal taste that goes well with local German toppings like cheese and salami. I often like to toast my sandwiches and these are perfect for that.
